A short video of the rice harvest. 3 1/2 acres harvested before the work was postponed due to imminent rain! Most unusual to see rain in May in Mettupalayam.There are another 2 acres or so still to harvest, Venkat has only planted 5 1/2 acres this year as it is not a profitable crop due to very high labour charges. The Government run a National Rural Employment Scheme, whereby everyone is entitled to a daily salary of 300 rupees (around £3) to do very little "make work", at least in our area.Still, Venkat should have around 10t of rice to sell in due course. ... It seems that almost every week, someone local celebrates a special occasion by providing lunch for all our schoolchildren and the elderly.This week, it was Pathima, the balvadi (nursery school) teacher. Today is International Women's Day.Over the years, Venkat, helped greatly by Gomathi, has trained and supported over 250 Sanghams, or women's groups, in a large area around Mettupalayam.These groups have helped to provide some financial independence to over 5,000 village women.We don't often remember to flag up this vital work that IRDT have facilitated, nor the financial support given by our FOM donors that has enabled this to happen. ...
