This beautiful young lady is Mohanapriyadharsini, from the Kuruvi tribal settlement. She goes to our Crakehall School, Mettupalayam, and as you will see from her English notebook, she has super handwriting. Her mother Chinnapunna, also came to our school and also had excellent handwriting, winning a prize and receiving recognition in the local press. She was very able, ranking first in her whole school year, and we had high hopes that she would carry on to higher education. However, she left secondary school at the age of 13 to get married, and at the age of 23, she now has four children. We will, of course, encourage Mohana to stay on at school and, who knows, become the first tribal girl to go to university! ... See MoreSee Less

At last, Rajeshwari is able to return to the Rangammal School for the Hearing Impaired. After many months of closure due to Covid 19, she received a message during the week, together with a list of requirements for her return. We are delighted to be able to provide funds to buy all these essentials as her parents are both with disabilities, and are part of our IRDT Mettupalayam community.Much appreciation goes to the Rangammal School who provide free education and support. ... Playtime for the Manampathi tribal children that Venkat and IRDT staff are helping with temporary primary school teaching, and of course, a nutritious daily lunchtime meal. Their usual Government primary school remains closed as do all these schools in Tamil Nadu.It is really pleasing to see these children so full of life and energy.Once Government schooling returns to normal, we will have to decide how we can best continue to help these very underprivileged and disadvantaged children. ... Talking with Venkat yesterday, he was saying how much the project has missed having visitors this last year, due to the virus. Then this morning, this post from four years ago popped up on our memories. We all have missed our visits too brother, but have wonderful memories of contributing in some small way to the wonderful work that Venkat and IRDT have been doing over the last 35 years. There are now children at the Crakehall School, Mettupalayam, whose grandparents were among the first pupils!Thank you Venkat and staff, we remain in awe of your achievements over such a long period.Post from 1st February 2017I've always known how hard being a primary school teacher is, but until you have to teach English to 10 year 4 and 14 year 5 pupils, who only have very rudimentary spoken English, after suffering a sleepless night, the reality hits home! This week, two of our teachers, both named Sandihya, are getting married, and taking leave. Normally, we have no difficulty in recruiting temporary replacements, but this time, it seems very difficult. Venkat, Ramya and myself went to the first Sandihya wedding early this morning, just after 7am, but still missed most of the formalities but in time to have our picture taken with the bride and groom, and then enjoy a Tamil wedding breakfast. Very nice food cooked by caterers. Both teachers asked for a one month salary advance/loan, but in recognition of their long service and as they both intend to return to teaching at our school after a short honeymoon, we agreed to give them a wedding gratuity of 5000 Rps (about £60). Needless to say, they were both very happy at this unexpected bonus!Returning to Mettupalayam, I entered my role as a trainee, stand-in English teacher! Only one lesson this morning of around 90 minutes, all on my own! Then after lunch a two hour lesson, partially aided by Venkat who translated in between dealing with visitors. I broke the longer lesson with a 15 minute break when the pupils ran madly around the playground, screaming! So today has been a normal day in the life of Crakehall School, Mettupalayam- full of fun, challenges, surprises, disappointments, delightful, naughty, intelligent and lively children and one old, tired but happy volunteer! And I wouldn't swap a minute of it! Incredible India indeed. ... See MoreSee Less

Every August Venkat organises a visit to the Patchyamman Koil (Green God temple). With Covid, this wasn't possible last year, so it was rearranged for today. All the children really enjoyed their visit, with a special meal and some leisure time. This temple is a truly wonderful place, not far from Mettupalayam, very peaceful and calm, with the site having two places to worship- the lower temple with several shrines, and the upper temple placed high on a hill. Most of the year, it is very quiet with few visitors, but during the special month people come from many miles away. One of my most favourite places, the family of priests who look after the temple are very welcoming, being former Crakehall School pupils, and they always include me in their worship when I visit. ...
